How do I convert a home DVD recording to a format suitable for YouTube?

I want to post a recording I made from TV on a DVD recorder on YouTube ... but the thing is, how do I do it? I don't even know what the file extension of a DVD recording is, but I rather suspect I will have to convert into something that computers like ... no doubt using some horrendously complicated piece of kit that I don't have ... advice please? Blow by blow!

Youtube accepts avi and mpeg video, you just need to convert your home dvd to the right video format, if you don't know how to do that, here is a step by step guide for you

go online and download prism video converter. It takes pretty much any video file and converts into a number of different files it takes a bit of time though. I use it to put dvd's onto my iPod

You cant the file is way too big and it as to be in the format of avi then you upload it to youtube and they do the rest. Hope this helps.

YouTube can accept FLV videos. This dvd ripper can convert DVDs to almost all popular video formats including flv:
