Is it legal if you rip music off of youtube and use it for a school project like a documentary?

What are the rights that the fair copyright laws give me in this situation?

My teacher said it was all right and my librarian told me that it was all right as long as its under 30 sec but I just wanted to make sure.

Copyrights work this way, first and foremost you don't have to copyright anything that you create because it becomes automatically your copyright. Is a good idea to do the cheap mans copy right by simply making a copy and mailing it to your self via first class mail and don't open it, so it has an official date provided on behalf of the government. Anyways about you tube stuff it would be infringement of someone else's creation if you don't get the ok from them. Also if is for a documentary I would get as much information about the clip so you can give it proper credit on the credits without having to ask for permission. Do remember that in you tube most people are already steeping over copyrights without knowing it so use common sense when presenting something. You can't go wrong by accrediting the person whom you believe is the author. Just in case to avoid anyone coming after you also add a line along the lines "TO THE BEST OF MY KNOLEDGE THE CREATOR OF THE MUSIC PRESENTED IN SCEENE WAS by------------" and so on GOOD LUCK with your project and is good that you are a responsible individual wanting to respect others creations.

U can use the music. no problem in it.

Ask your teacher if they would have a problem with that or consider it plagiarism in any way. If they are fine with it I wouldn't worry about it unless theres some narc student in your class that would report you to the author or something weird like that.

As long as you give proper credit to the artist that made the song, and do not attempt to make money using their work, you should be fine.
