Wikipedia Editing Ettiquette: Should I remove dead (red) internal links?

I recently started editing some Wikipedia articles, and I noticed a lot of links for pages that don't exist on Wikipedia. Should I leave these dead links in, since they point to a page that lets you create that article, or should I remove the dead links?

I usually keep the red links in, so long as they point to something I think Wikipedia should have an article on. The red link can encourage new users or anyone to create it.

Also, there is a feature in the MediaWiki software (which runs Wikipedia) to see what pages are "most wanted". (e.g. red links from the most articles). The feature may be disabled now, since Wikipedia is so enormous. But, technical folks can generate these lists from time to time.

Another feature of MediaWiki is "What links here", in the toolbox on the left side of the page. It works for red links (empty pages), as well as existing pages. For example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Wha...

Here is a guideline with more information on what to do:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:R...

Cheers!

If the SERVICE is still alive... that is, the DOMAIN responds to tell you that the page is not found with a 404 error, then removing that link might be appropriate. It might be better to FIX the link.

But it is says SERVICE NOT FOUND, it might be a temporary outage, and removing the link might not be appropriate right now.

You can look for that exact link at http://www.archive.org and see when it disappeared.

You are editing to IMPROVE. That means taking some time to seek the new address, or look for that archive. If you find the archive, it might exist somewhere else. Just maybe GOOGLE can help to locate the new address of similar or exact copy of the reference.

Hey, I make Wikipedia corrections too.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
