Why is Wikipedia blocked at schools?

Is it because they hold false information edited by other people?

It's not so much the false information, but the fact that anyone can add anything.

Its too easy to use it to cheat.

That's one reason.

mainly blocks the schools ip address because students sometimes vandalize it?

basically - no one checks the facts on wikipedia - its more donation of ones knoweledge that may or may not be true -

because schools consider it to be an unreliable source and try to discourage kids from using it.

is it wikipedia is a very knowledgable website

My School blocks it because it gives some info we don't want to know.

Idk About yours though.

mine don't ..

There is images of naked bodies on there...really! Look up Brazilian waxing.

It's because anyone can edit it, so therefore the information isn't necessarily true. I know, it stinks.

well it's not really reliable in a sense, but also it gives so much information they don't want you to plagiarize, especially when it's so easy to access... and you may be feeding yourself invalid information

because you can type in boobs, penis, testicles, breast and it will show a picture.

i dont know why it would be blocked there is a alot of things on there that are use full to know

Yes it is. Anyone can make wikipedia account and put false information. Therefore, this information is not trustworthy or safe for students to use. This may lead to the wrong knowing of information in any subject. Though some information is correct, schools don't like to take chances.

Wikipedia and Wikihow are banned at several schools because, being editable by anyone who feels like it, can have either links to profane websites or profane material on the site itself.

1) Your school's IP itself had been banned from wikipedia for lots of students messing around and editing wikipedia entries falsely.
2) Your school blocked it cause it has a lot of great answers.
3) Wikipedia is very reliable. If somebody has falsely edit it. THere is a community to double check every single edit.

You can edit the pages, so there are a lot of nasty things written on there that have nothing to do with the subject.

Because it's unreliable.
Since anyone can post on it, schools [hopefully] want to rid people of the misconception that it is a valuable researce tool.

Yes, because not all the information on Wikipedia is accurate, and some articles include info that is considered cheating at some schools. Many schools vary though, like the high school I attended said it's cause they want us to find information through books and not through the internet; or by some other helpful internet site.

It is because of the "forums" and "open discussions" at Wikipedia.

my history was telling me about this... Well, people can really just add random things on there, so like you could be using info that's totally not true and you'd like fail.... so therefore it's just easier to get the true facts even though it might take longer... That's all I got!

b/c people could tell u anything u want ic ould say that hitler loved the jews if i wanted to

well for one , you can find information about anything on there and I guess some of the stuff would be inappropiate for high school students

i'e' info on illegal drugs ,. info on pornstars, etc

it wasn't blocked at my school but the teachers were always mad because kids would plagiarize from it.
Also a lot of the info isn't true. My English teacher said if wikipedia is listed as a source, you get an automatic F.

D=

It's probably because they are trying to instill good academic habits in the students. No teacher or professor would accept wikipedia as a reliable source of information because anyone can edit anything on it.

They want students to get in the habit of citing sources from academic journals and publications.

some schools block wiki because of the information that is contained on them. It is very easy for people to go in and change the content.

Is Wiki blocked at ALL schools? I doubt it.
If it is blocked at yours maybe you should ask your administrators why? If you want to access it anyway, try using a proxy - there are many free proxies.

at my school it isnt
but we had an assembly about this
and the person said it was because anyone could change the information whether it be true of false

Some of it is true, and some is false. There is no central editing bureau, and no fact checker who is accountable for errors. So you can make up stuff, and it will be entered into Wikipedia.

My school doesn't block Wiki. I get all my information there and confirm them on another site, and I turn my stuff in and get an A. Without Wiki (and Google) I don't how else I'm gonna learn stuff.
