Can anyone tell me the history of the Wikipedia network? How it got its name and stuff like that?

You can read the article "History of Wikipedia":

In brief:

Wikipedia's predecessor was "Nupedia" -- an encyclopedia project written by experts (Ph.D. holders, scholars etc.) The project was founded by Jimmy Wales, and is now defunct.

However, Nupedia was progressing very slowly. So, Larry Sanger, the editor-in-chief of Nupedia and Jimmy Wales discussed various ways to create content more rapidly.

The idea of a wiki-based complement originated from a

Ben Kovitz, a computer programmer, introduced Larry Sanger to wikis over dinner on January 2, 2001. A wiki is a website that allows users to add and edit content in a collaborative manner.

Sanger thought a wiki would be a good platform to use, and proposed on the Nupedia mailing list that a wiki be set up as a "feeder" project for Nupedia. Jimmy Wales set a wiki up and put it online on January 10, 2001.

The name "Wikipedia" ("Wiki" + Encyclo"pedia") was suggested by Larry Sanger.

Wikipedia attracted many new participants after being mentioned three times on the Slashdot website. Gradually, it started getting coverage from media and bloggers, and became very popular. Google traffic also contributed a lot to its popularity.

Larry Sanger later left the project due to some differences. Wikipedia was open to editing by everybody, but Sanger advocated an expert-led culture, with final editorial control by chief editors. Sanger has now created a new project called Citizendium.

Go toi Wikipedia and do a search for it. It will tell you of it's history.
