Why would schools want to block wikipedia?

it was my favorite source of information. why would my school block it?

It is considered an open source, meaning anybody can add to it without it being checked for authenticity. A lot of information found there is false or misleading. Because of this it has lost it's credibility and is no longer considered reliable.

Because anyone can post to wikipedia - school do not consider it as a valid source any more. Even though most of the information is correct and very helpful, some of it is misleading and can cause potential harm and disinformation.

Anyone can write on wikipedia. This means information can often be wrong and work is not cited. There are many ways to gather information not just from a site with potentially copied material, say for instance the library.

I had no opinion on this topic until I entered graduate school. Of all of the sources of information that can be used from journals and studies my fellow students use wikipedia. Why do students even think this is as credible as a fully researched and cited article?

some kids are badd

It is really easy to get info off wikipedia, but its also soooo easy to edit things.

i know a guy who changed an entire paragraph about an artist to some thing like "i am an evil martian. your brain will melt if you do not eat pizza for every meal for a year."

some school block it entirely, buit my school just tells you not to use it, and there have been times when kifds have just copied entire paragraphs for essays. no one has gotten away with it.

I would like to correct some people answering here: Wikipedia is NOT blocked for is open-sourceness (is that a word?). It is blocked because of its page setup. You cannot block a wiki search for "penis" is you do not block "scientific notation". This means you either block EVERYTHING or NOTHING, and schools HAVE to block EVERYTHING.

Wikipedia is a reliable source. There are many, many, many programs such as TWINKLE that run on Wikipedia 24/7 that, when looked at by at least one user, detects any noticeably large change (such as blanking a page), detects any blocked words (such as f***), and even can detect misspelled words that can be corrected. Believe me, I monitor Wikipedia occasionally.

Your school would block it because it could be a copyright law. And even if not, ITs not always a source of correct information. Depending on the info that you are looking for.

wikipedia is a place that every one can arrange passages according their believes and in my opinion it doesn't have an important effect in schools or ....

Wikipedia is most likely blocked because it is not a censored site. They do have articles on things that schools don't like you to be looking at (i.e., porn). Thus, the schools just say "Nope. No Wikipedia."

Because Wikipedia is most unreliable source of information.

People can make fish mean a explosive product used in mining. Jay Leno (i believe) actually made a BUNCH of bogus posts on it, causing not much havoc, but still gave wrong information.

just use a proxy to get into wiki from school...

Its bad to hear this. There cant b any Gd reason to do this. Appose it, consult your Principal.
