How on Earth can you classify Green Day as POP-PUNK?! There's nothing pop about them! If you can tell me that they are, please explain why! And if you agree with me, please feel free to answer however you need to!

Oh and I forgot to mention that if you use Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) in your defense I want you to know it really means a big F*** You!

i always understood pop to mean 'popular' and green day is 'pop' to that extent. They are also punk. Their message is punk , their music is punk, they just happen to be popular.

people that have wikipedia can write things on wikipedia the free encyclapidia (i know i spelt that wrong). so people that dont know crap probably wrote that

Green Day is considered pop-punk because they sound punk, but have an annoying, stupid, and unswerving fanbase that makes them Pop.

well back when they came out they were alternative..then they sold out to the changing face of consumer trends..so theyre pop punk...once the music industry cuts your balls and your hair off...your done

Green Day is unabashedly pop-punk. Listen to them next to 1970s punk and you'll hear the difference. There's nothing wrong with that either -- there's such a thing as good pop.

I hate it when that happens. I would say they're alternative rock and there's also nothing punk about them either.

i agree to an extent: green day is not infact poppy or anything of the sort. but, they are also not punk. wikipedia gathers inormation that is really general && i'd guess that older people write those things. maybe youh should try to edit it?

It's a music genre, even the band coould never catagorize themselves and have everyone agree. Get over it. Wikipedia is edited by everyone so it never stops growing, it is information found by any number of people who decided to edit it.

well i totally agree with you, wikipedia doesnt know crap. at my school we wikipedia is blocked because most of the facts aren't true or reliable. so don't use wikipedia, its sucks!

green day are definitely pop punk and what do you mean nothing pop about them, they are one of the most well known pop punk bands of all time alongside blink 182

Iggy Pop is Punk, Green Day is too watered down to be considered real punk by many of those in that generation.
Given how popular Green Day is despite how different they are from real punk I would imagine is how the term "pop-punk" came into play.
In fact, a real punk band being on the charts is kind of funny given the real punk culture.

I'm with Liam! I think the easiest way to classify a band is by stereotyping their fan base, and green day's fan base is usually people who cry too freakin much, so I would classify them as and emo band, aka"pop-punk"

the people in wikipedia probably classified them as "pop" because a lot of people know who they are, they're "popular". and "punk" because of their style of fashion. green day does wear converse shoes, spiky hair, make up, studded belts etc...

You know what "pop" is short for, right? Popular. Any negative connotations are due to the fact that most pop punk bands suck. Green Day is one of the few that doesn't, but they are still pop punk, because they are POP-ular, and mainstream punk. Any punk band that gets regular airplay and has a bunch of 15 year old girls screaming "Billie Joe!" gets classified as pop. Simple as that.
