Sudden lost of disk space and screensaver can't run at all. What's actually happening? How can I resolve this?

I have been using Window Vista Home edition for some time and it works perfectly fine untill three days ago, when my disk space suddenly went missing. I had 160gb harddisk and had been maintaining my memory space at 90 to 100gb free but three days ago, my programs were running surprisingly slowly and I had a check on my memory space. It said that I had only 30gb worth of disk space left. What is actually happening? Where has all my diskspace gone? I tried deleting my files and programs but the mass amount of diskspace couldn't be retrieved.

And then, I had this message when my laptop was running the screensaver.
"The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or one that's compatible with Direct3D"

Can anyone help me?
Thanks a million.

1) screen saver, it means that it requires a video card that can support direct3D. not all video cards have this, it is not a big deal as long as you it doesnt affect your work. direct 3D support are usuallt available to other better video cards used for gaming and hi-graphics work.

2) hard disk space?? hmmm...you must run "disk clean up" to delete old/unneeded files to your harddisk. Your computer usually stores temporary files from the sites that you browse, IT WILL NOT HARM YOU PC...the system will show you; and knows, what should be deleted. You can do this by right clicking on the hard disk then selecting properties, then choose disk cleanup. You can also use file compression, you just do the same as i indicated above then click "compress drive to save disk space", i recommend doing this on your second drive partition (if you had partitioned your disk) or on your second hard disk.

also try to defragment your disk after doing the things above.

The missing hard drive space has to do with Vista automatically creating restore points of your files. To get rid of this, you need to delete existing shadow copies and change the setting so that Vista no longer creates them automatically. I had this too - I went from 25 GB free to 100 MB free. Report It
