How do I get a video to work on Windows Media Player 10?

I get the sound from the video, but no image. I am told that:

'A codec is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the web, please click Web Help'.

Well, I cant find 'Web Help', so I dont know what to do. Where would I download the codec from? The file type is .avi, so if the file type is the problem, how do I change it?

in order for the video to play in windows media player it should be in .wmv format. you can download convertors for this lots of places, just type wmv convertor into google.

I think If you take Browns advice it will be OK. Or in my opnion download VLC Player it will play practically everything.
