Why wont my downloaded video play?

I have downloaded some videos from Ares2. Two of the videos play fine but others have no picture just sound. I also cannot play them in windows media player. I thort it might be the format avi. but its not. My friend told me I need some sort of a codec but I havnt an idea what one to get or where to get it from.

Your friend is right, it is a codec issue.

I recommend using VLC media player (it can play anything). Best part is it's free, open source and completely free of spyware. It is also the most popular player out there.

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

If you also want free codecs, the K-Lite Codec Pack should allow your media player (e.g. Windows Media Player) to able to play 99% of all the movies that you download from the internet.

It's most likely the codecs. Go to divx.com and download the codecs. It's right there. That should solve it. If not go here and download the xp codec pack. I had to do that. http://www.xpcodecpack.com/

You don't use the computer often, do you? A codec is a special plug-in for media players to play the file, but you can better use VideoLan VLC Player ( http://www.videolan.org ). It really plays everything!
