Does PC Jacking really help spreading Linux or its just a waste of time ? |
http://www.manucornet.net/pcjacking/ Probably a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, I love Linux. I started out using Slackware in 1994 on a 486 - installed via floppy disk. I'm currently running Ubuntu at home. But Linux definitely isn't for everyone. It's very frustrating seeing the Linux advocates around here telling people who can't figure out Windows basics to switch to Linux. Ubuntu and some of the modern distros are making great strides, but they're still best for people who have a clue, or who are up for an adventure. The average user will take one look at it and run away screaming. Things like this, and PC jacking just come across as obnoxious, and are more likely to turn users against Linux than it is to recruit them. If you really want to make people aware, start a Linux Users Group. Advertise events. Set aside one weekend every few months where the group will get together and install Linux on PCs for those who are interested and provide training for a while. Do some volunteer work - see if you can interest your local library or school or charity of some sort in using Linux. Offer to install and support it, at least for a while. If you want people to use Linux, the best way to do this is to offer to invest time in helping them to learn and understand it. Just slapping it on machines is like throwing a bunch of kids into the deep end of a swimming pool and watching to see if any of them make it or if they all drown. I think I will go ahead and generate a load of Linux Live CD's 'AWESOME CONCEPT' and it causes no harm. Probably just a waste of time. I did something similar when I realized that my school didn't password-protect the bios on their computers. The schools tech guy just reinstalled XP like a few days later. They still don't have a password on the bios anymore, though |
