What is a "codec" and why do I need it to import a video onto windows movie maker?

I just converted an episode of blood+ (my fav anime) and when I tried it import it to WMM it said--

"The file C:\Y.D.T\Converted\video_id=f72_RWPns-c (1).avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again"

What did you convert the video to? And what was it from the start? Codec is short for coder/decoder. They are software files your mediaplayer uses to let you see clips. Mediafiles are compressed in various ways. To view a videoclip of a certain format your computer needs to know how to unpack it. A decoder does this. To make a videoclip you need to be able to compress it in the format you want. A coder does this. Mpeg2 is an .mpg codec. Divx is an .avi codec. Sorenson is a .mov codec. Your version of Windows movie maker is missing that vital piece of information. It doesn麓t know how to handle that file you have. You converted it into the codec wmm can麓t handle. Try converting the file again only use a different codec. Or you can try to find an update on Microsofts web page. You should be able to find the codec there.
