Why doesn't my computer detect blank DVDs?

I want to make a copy of a DVD, but when I insert a blank DVD, my computer for some reason doesn't detected. How then can I make a copy of a DVD?

By the way, I DO have a DVD-ROM?

if you have a DVD-ROM, that is a READER ONLY. You can read DVDs, but not write or copy to blank DVDs. A DVDRW will allow you to copy data to blank DVDs

You need to have a DVD Writer, not just a DVD-ROM drive.
