What is the difference between a file and a document in a computer?

A file is any single thing on your computer. It could be text (.txt or .doc), it could be an executable file (.exe), a .dll file, or any other extension. A document is a specific kind of file, which contains text (and could include pictures within the text). Documents would be made in a word processor, such as notepad or Microsoft Word. Common formats for documents are '.txt', '.doc' (and '.docx'), and '.rtf'. Hope that helps.
