Graphic Designers: Adobe Illustrator VS In Design?!?

I'm pretty much an "expert" in Illustrator and I'm great with Photoshop, but I never learned In Design in school. Is it easy to use if one knows Illustrator & Photoshop? What do I need to know about it. What is it's main purpose? Just page layouts? That's the feeling I get... I actually use Illustrator to do layouts now... which one is better and if I know Illus and Photo can I "say" I'd be able to use In Design? Otherwise, I might need a class!!! Thank you!!! :) (I'm looking for a new job and everyone asks that you know in design now... i'm hoping id know how to use it since i know illus and photoshop..?! thx again! :) ~ meliss

InDesign is a high-end page layout program. The latest version (CS3) has added some very useful features. It understands Illustrator and Photoshop. But it is more than just a page layout program, you can create anything from simple fliers up through books with tables of contents and indexes.

Illustrator is great for certain kinds of work, but it really is limited to single pages. InDesign is almost unlimited in how many pages you build. You will see some similar features between the two, but if you are going to do more than single sheet items, you do want to use InDesign. There is a learning curve, but you will recognize some features when you learn it.

I would say to take a workshop or class in InDesign, and maybe invest in a book or two. Although you are an expert in Illustrator and Photoshop, there is a lot of complexity in InDesign that you really can't claim to know how to use it unless you take some time and learn it.
