Help! Quick!?

Ok, i had a copy of a 'history' folder on my usb, which had all my notes and drafts for this essay in history class. I had the updated version on my computer, and for some stupid reason i accidently copied over the old version from my usb onto my pc, and said 'yes' to erase the new stuff and replace it with the old stuff. the document i needed was in my recent documents but i cant' access it, and it's not in my recycle bin either. does anyone know how i can get this document back?

you can try running a recovery program like file scavenger (web search for a download), but those don't work all the time.
