Making animations?

After watching numerous Flash animations, it looked like a lot of fun. Is there some free software (or very cheap) I can use? I've never done anything like that before, so where can I learn.

Also, on a sort of related topic, I would like PowerPoint. Can I borrow the installation disk from a friend, or will that not work?

For powerpoint, the cd can only be used on one ip, unless a special disc is bought. Usually only libraries, schools, businesses, etc. have this disc, so probably not.

Most flash programs are expensive and aren't fun. ;P I think Adobe has some. :)
