How do I convert to 72 dpi on Adobe Photoshop Starter edition 3.2?

I have a website (http://exp.post475.tripod.com/explorerpo... with pictures and got the comment back that I should adjust the dpi of the pictures but I don't know how to do that on my version of adobe so if someone could please tell me how that would be appreciated

p.s. any other suggestions for the website would be much accepted!

So, this person is giving you bad advice. When displayed on a monitor, the ppi will probably be 72 or 96 ppi. It makes no difference what the original ppi is. It is not the ppi that needs to be changed. The ppi is fine. The size, width x height, is too big and the jpg compression is not enough. This results in files are much much too large in kilobytes, therefore it takes too long to download to the viewers computer.

I download you first photograph, fronts. Its dimension is 3008 x 2000 pixels. The file size if 1.5 Mb. Nobody wants to wait for that size of file to download, particularly if they are on a dialup connection. So here is what you need to do.

First, Resize the photos to about 600 pixels in its longest dimension. Saved at the very best quality, meaning the least compression, the jpeg file will be about 254.4 Kb. This is a more than an 85% file size reduction. When the resizing is done make sure that the "Resample" box is checked. However, it will display nicely on over the internet at a higher compression. So, the next step...

Second, "Save as" or if Photoshop Starter has it use "Save for Web", and when the dialog window comes up about Quality, use Medium or if you can put in a number, use 30 to 50. You will not be able to see the difference. Now your file size might be as low as 40 Kb and it will look fine. WOW, a 97% reduction! BTW, you can use the Save for Web, if it is there under File, and do the resizing in the window that opens, thus retaining the original size of the photograph. In this case, either save to a different folder or give it a different name as the you don't want your original to be overwritten by a file that has been edited.

PPI is considered by many as the resolution of an image. When it goes to a printer, it is dot per inch or dpi. It does make a difference at the printer. But changing the ppi has absolutely nothing to do with what the file looks like on your monitor or the filesize in kb. Given the same width, height dimensions, a 1 ppi image is exactly the same size as a 30,000 ppi image in kilobytes. AND, they will look exactly the same on the monitor. Resolution is the number of megapixels of an image, that is why the megapixels of camera is toted as one of the selling points.

I have to say that I do not have PS Starter but have been using a number of PS programs for several years. The resize and saving methods I would think are the same.

Hopefully you will come back to see this. What I wrote is no different in Photoshop or Paint. It is very, very basic image editing and internet display techinques. Thanks for the Best Answer. Report It

I'm sorry dude..

I've only used 5.0, CS2 and now CS3
