Joining partitions with gparted on Ubuntu? |
I have just deleted the Vista partition using gparted. I now want to join the resulting free space with the existing Ubuntu partition. I think you need to use a live cd with gparted, because gparted can't resize mounted partitions. (The Linux Mint live CD has gparted.) here is how you resize a partition unsing gparted: If you are using GRUB go into the grub.conf file and delete (comment out [#]) the entry for Vista. But be careful! The numbering system is tricky. Read the forums for tips on this. The GRUB configuration file counts the "Other Operating Systems" as a boot entry. I've edited this before with no probs but you must pay careful attention. you need to edit grub to get rid of the vista entry To make your new free space part of your linux partition, just use gparted, or GNOME Partition Editor, to erase sda1. Then you can just resize/move your Linux partition to fill your free space. Before you do this, back up /home and anything else you couldn't simply reinstall. The reason is that the move/resize can sometimes mess up, but I've done it multiple times and never had a problem. It takes a long time, but once you start it, you can leave and come back to check on it. |
