Can anyone suggest a free software similar to photoshop to resize photos?

Greetings! I am trying (emphasis on trying) to build a simple website. When I tried to upload an image which is 765K - I realized that the image has to be no more than 100k. I have to change the DPI from 300 to 72 so I can upload images to my webpage.

Is there any free software that will allow me to do this? Someone told me that Photoshop can perform this function but the only task I am looking to do is to resize my images.

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate your help!

If you want to upload images to the website,I suggest you consider changing the image format.Sometimes different formats makes image different sizes.JPG,PNG and GIF images can be supported by a website while JPG images is larger.I often change JPG format to GIF when I upload an image to website.Just use the MS paint.Easy to do it.

If you need a simple and low-cost image resizer software,I've got one "Resize"(you can get it from http://www.brothersoft.com/resize-65276.... ).It can do JPEG image size processing by control the quality,height,width and percent.It is Free.
Another freeware can do both image format converting and image resizing work is The GIMP.You can get it from

All the answers are good suggestions. I noticed the fellow who mentioned gimp only gave you irfan's website. Check both of them out and the others, but gimp is at http://www.gimp.org . It's available for every OS under the sun.

what you need to get is "photo gadget" !!!
after you install, right click on an image(and click photo gadget resize) to enable the program.
photo gadget allows you to choose a custom size (measured in pixels) to each photo // and you can do (resize) multiple photos also.
you do not even need a desktop icon to use photo gadget
as it works in the context menu(right click)of photo files
