How to put a diferent footnote in each page using microsoft word document?

hi I have tried so many things and I can't get to edit my footnotes correctly, I'm writing a Chicago style document and so I have to put footnotes in every page, but then if I type something in page 1 it will show up in page 2, 3 &4, and if I erase the info from page 2, 3 &4 then the info from page 1 is gone too, what change do I need to make, using microsoft word 2003, thanks! :)

You're trying to put footnotes in the footers. That won't work.

Word has a real footnoting system that will automatically maintain the numbering sequence no matter what you do to the footnotes. It will also do its darnedest to keep the footnotes on the page (and out of the footer, too), as well as give them a format different from the normal text.

To put in a Word footnote (Word XP (2002) and adjacent versions. Word Vista (2007) should have a similar mechanism):

1.Position the cursor where you want the footnote reference to go.
2.Click on the Insert->Reference->Footnote menu item.
3.Click Insert.
4.Type the footnote.

The footnotes are best viewed in Print Layout view, at least until you get used to how they work.

Hope that helps.
