Is there a website or program where I can make a picture larger and clearer for free?

I have a picture my friend took from a cellphone but i wanna make it larger and clearer.is there any website or program that i can do that for free?

Making pictures larger and clearer is a notoriously difficult process that even the professionals have a hard time with. Of course this depends on a lot of factors, such as how much bigger you want the second image to be, and the resolution.

In general, stretching images out larger than their original size will naturally make them appear fuzzy or grainy. There are sophisticated software tools being developed to compensate for this, but they are still far from perfect. Essentially, when making an image larger, the software is attempting to "guess" at details to fill in the larger surface area of the stretched image. Some software will fill in extra pixels, deciding their colors based on probabilities drawn from the surrounding pixels.

Interestingly, vector images (flash & shockwave animations for example) are immune to this and can be stretched out infinitely. This is because they are line-drawn images whose scale (the size of the graph they are drawn on) can be limitless, in theory.

If you are looking at making a drastic size change, 50% greater or more, even Photoshop will only be able to provide mediocre results. The rule of thumb is; the larger you stretch an image, the more detail you will inevitably lose.

When working with images that you know you will want for projects later, try to get the largest, most hi-res copies of them possible. Shrinking an image down is always easier and yields infinitely better results than scaling it up.

I recommend GIMP, it has many features of Photoshop and costs nothing.

Other free alternatives would be Paint.net or Picasa from Google.
