I want to migrate WindowsXp to Ubuntu 7.10. Can u tell me first step and basics for this.?

I want to migrate to Ubunto from Window Xp.

Download an iso file first. Burn CD.

Set BIOS boot with CD.

Try Ubuntu Live first...

You can play liveCD try basic software..


It's good that you wanna change.

But i recommend you. Use both of them. Do a dual boot.


becuase, first u 'll have a lot of question about Ubuntu.
How to,,,bla bla bla... Which software for Ubuntu can....?
etc.

Try LiveCD, And if you want to install it to HDD

Back up your important files first.

Download Ubuntu and burn to CD.
Set your computer BIOS to boot from the cd drive,run Ubuntu live and check that all your hardware works and you are happy with it. Then if you are sure you want to change use the 'install' option.
Remember to BACK UP all your data first as this will wipe your hard drive when doing the full install!

When you say "migrate"... do you mean that you want to switch over? Or do you have a bunch of stuff (e-mails, files, etc) you want to transfer over?

If you want to just start new with Ubuntu, simply put the disc in and install it... it's a breeze to install.

If you have files you want to transfer over, you'll need to back those files up... best bet would be either CD, DVD, or USB drive. Once the files are backed up, install Ubuntu (again... installing Ubuntu is simple... just follow the prompts). Once Ubuntu is installed, just copy your files back over into your documents folder.
