When I use free wireless internet, can what I view be monitored? |
I was in a hospital recently, and they had free wireless. I hooked and wondered if this hospital was monitoring what sites I visited. namely: Joox, Movieforumz, and OVguide. Can my internet usage be monitored on a wireless network? Actually your own computer also keeps a record of the sites you visit. As an IT professional I can assure you that nobody is watching you 100 percent of the time, but they can and will monitor your usage if it a) exceeds their maximum bandwidth (say you're downloading music) or b) they notice a violation of their Terms of Service (viewing porn, terrorist related info, hacker sites, etc.) The only people who aren't into the security side of things that want to view your time on the internet are people looking to steal your info, but on a secured network like the one you were using at the hospital, it's nearly impossible. So feel free to go to what sites you want to without being so afraid. ...yes..they are watching Absolutely. yes because anyone can access it. yes, anyone can monitor anytome what is being sent to and from your compuer and if they have the software, they can even modify it. the only thing is that they have to be on the sane network, but in this case because this is free wireless without encryption anyone can get on. So don't do things like online banking in public places!!! It is technically possible but as one of the answerer has remarked hardly any possibility that anybody in the hospital would bother. In BPOs they nomally keep an occasional watch. |
