Has anyone been a victim of identity theft?

If you have been one how did it happen to you? and what did you do?

I was! My mother tells me that when i was very young she lost a wallet containing my SS card, my birth certificate etc...., she never reported it as ID theft was unheard of, a few years later i received a letter from a school in Brooklyn NY explaining that i was EXPELLED from school, I was 19 at the time and had graduated High SChool at 16, I called and they insisted I was their expelled student, I let it go (Not thinking of the credit coinsecuences to come) and later when applying for my first credit card found out I have over $20,000 in debt, the address that this other woman gave was a barbershop in Queens NY that alledges have never heard of her! I have called every single agency but because this has been going on for so long no one can do anything, just last night I ran my free annual credit report and saw that I now have a mortgage and because I do not know which bank I am mortgaged with (she is teh one that knows) they will NOT give me any info!!!!!! I am desperate and seriously considering bankrupcy.

P.S: Been to, police do not care

never

I was buying something online and the person took my identitiy . Im still working hard to get it back.

sounds ruff
no i havent but i would go to the poilice and do anything to prove that you are you

no, but i have jokingly said i wish someone would steal my identity because it might help improve my credit rating!

no have you?

My mom's Mastercard got identity stolen, but the guy who did it was an idiot, and just bought stuff like gas and food from Popeyes. He tried going to Burger King, but he went over the limit of purchases in a day, and ran out the door. The fraud department called me and I got my money back and a replacement card.

yup. got a call from a collection agency saying I owed 8000.00 on a credit card I never owned. I asked them to fax me a copy of the application. They did, and I pointed out that aside from my name, everything on the appication was wrong. I never worked for Xerox, That wasn't my mother's maiden name, or my social security number, or anything else. Nothing matched. They had to stop calling cause the credit card company did not do due diligence when the person applied for the credit card to verify I am who they said I was.

If you suspect, first call your credit card companies and explain. They will immediately put a freeze on spending and an alert will go out if someone tries to use it. They'll issue you a new card w/ a diff number. Next, run your credit reports (they're free) Do all three reports. If there is anything suspicious, you can contest the entries right on the internet. If they research and find it is not your charge, they will remove it from your credit. This could take a few weeks. If you have issues with your SSN, call the social security office and they will take appropriate steps to help protect you.

I was a victim of identity theft. But not with a credit card. An online world is where I lost mine. You don't want to know how they got my password, but they got into my account and sent scam mails to my friends so I purposely froze my account to protect them...... but I think some of my friends had already fallen for it.......... but when this happens, the best you can do is do what you can and hope things turn out for the better.

well it almost came to that. my drivers license was stolen. this was when the number was the social security number. some girl tried to use it and than God it was at a store my friend worked at. so that was nipped in the bud. heard it can takes years for someone to recover from identity theft.

nope, but my brother has

on e bay...do not fill out ANYTHING anyone sends you asking for personal information, account info etc.
if this happens go into your e bay account and if it;s real....it will be there,IF IT IS NOT THERE, DELETE IT
this happened to me and it;s a mess getting everything straight again, bank account, etc.
and do not click on anything that says free...NOTHING IS FREE.
