Help! I think I've got a virus on my computer.?

Something came up that said 'this looks like you: link' on MSN from my friend and I clicked on it and it took me to this page and asked me to download something. Now, for some reason, sometimes my internet makes me download pictures that I want to open in my browser so I thought it was a normal picture so I downloaded it, then went to open it and it said it was an .exe file and if I was sure I wanted to open it so I clicked cancel.
Now my laptop saves things straight to the desktop and its on there but when I try to delete it it says I need permission and when I click try again it just keeps coming up with the same box.

How do I get rid of it? Has anyone else had this virus and knows what to do?
I've ran a virus check on it but it came up clean :/

Please help?

Technician, it was a link from my friend. Not a stranger. That's why I clicked on it.

ForensicGirl. I have Norton. It came up with nothing, and I don't have a lack of security awareness. If your friend sent you a link saying 'this looks like you' wouldn't you click on it too? And considering that I quite often have to download pictures to view them I thought it was the same case. I knew as soon as it said it was an .exe file to not click continue.

The problem is that I can't delete it off of my desktop. Will someone just please tell me how to do that?

First, NEVER click on links from friends as you don't know where they got the link from. (It is always best to be safe than sorry) You need to run your antivirus program, and even run your spyware program also, on your antivirus program do a Full System Scan, ater all has finish and you see no viruses or spyware, then go to System Restore, this will take your computer back a few days or more before this happen, then everything will be alright . Go to Start> All Programs> Accessiores> System Tools> once that screen open up, scroll down where you will see System Restore, click there and follow directions. Good Luck.

Well, don't click links from strangers!!!

Try running a virus scan, those always help.

Obviously you are using an inadequate security scanner and have a problem with a lack of security awareness...

Get rid of whatever scanner you are using that you think is protecting you and:

Invest in a proper security suite (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) preferably now from ONE reliable vendor (like McAfee OR Norton) and ensure it is properly configured and completely up to date.. then perform a complete scan after you reboot and do it with all programs closed out of the background.

You may also want to ensure that windows updates are completely current.

Good Luck

I had the same problem,
i reccomend you download
ad-aware & spybot & Spyware Doctor
(all free) on both computers
and run seperate scans on all 3.
they will each pick up a different part
of the virus, and wipe it out.
i had the same problem man trust me.

Look download hijackthis and run a scan then remove it.
http://www.hijackthis.de/
This site is also in English.
Or go to start and select run and type in regedit, the go to edit and type in the file or exe if you know the name and delet its key and then reboot your pc .

It happened to me when my laptop was infected with spyware they then ask for $50 to clear it up.I spent hours trying to clean it up without success. Finally I went for restore to Jan 27 problem solved.I have Vista.

Go to spybot .com and download it.(its free and it will take some time, but if it cant remove the virus it can at least isolate it./ good luck!

anything that is .exe is an executable file, which means it is doing something on your computer. From what you have said , i would suspect that it is up to no good. You should download Spybot - Search & Destroy and also ADAware, both available from www.Download.com, for free. Once you download them, run Spybot first, but select Update. When that is updated select Immunize then run it to do a system check. When that has done its job, let it delete what it finds. Then you should run ADAware, select Update. You then run a scan with that and let it delete what it finds. Any probs get in touch.
