Alright, so how do I trace IP addresses? What are IP addresses?

I need to trace and IP address of a few people. I need a downloadable thing or I need someone to tell me how I can trace it on the PBwiki site. I really need to know! Help!!!

An IP address is a 4 octet number assigned by an internet service provider to a computer connecting to the internet.
For instance, 192.168.1.1

If you go to http://whatsmyip.org/ it will show you what your IP address is. You can also drop to a command prompt (the DOS screen) by going to Start > Run > type cmd > hit enter
then at the command prompt C:\ type ipconfig and hit enter
C:\ipconfig

This will show you your ip address (which may be different than you saw from that website if you are connecting through a router).


You can trace an IP address from the command prompt too.. using the tracert command
So if you know the IP address you can drop to a command prompt and type
C:\tracert 192.168.1.1 (hit enter)

If you are looking to find out who has sent you an email or something.. then you would look in the FULL HEADER portion of the email and then within SamSpade you can perform a WHOIS search... this will tell you the ISP that owns the IP. If you perform a traceroute the best you will come to finding a specific person is the location of the closest router to them.. so you just might find out what town they are in but without a court order / subpoena presented to the ISP you will not get their name, address, phone, etc...

Try "pathping www.yahoo.com" or whatever site you're trying to locate. Hope this helps...

You can't without an actual connection to the PC's in question, unless you are admin of the site in which case all IP's are logged. Besides that, getting a persons IP will only tell you the name of the server they are using for the connection. You CAN NOT get names, addresses, telephone #'s, etc. Sorry Now, if you want the IP of a website go into a the command console and type ...... ping www.wherever.com ....... The IP address will be shown

A persons ISP issues their IP Address. And most people have a dynamic IP address that their ISP changes every 24 hours or so. Pretty useless to anyone.

In the USA, the only way to get an ISP to release personal information (name, telephone, address etc.) about a particular IP address is with a Court Order. Don't hold your breath.

And Court Orders are usually only given out in the case of suspected serious criminal activity. Not juvenile foolishness.

All someone can determine from an IP address is the general geographic location. Perhaps narrow it down to one in a million people.

BTW, adults can differentiate between a "need" and a "want".
Young and immature children cannot.
