What all should I download to keep my laptop running smoothly and virus-free and without pop-ups and such?

And where can I download these things for free? I want my laptop to run as smoothly as possible but I'm not sure what all I need to avoid viruses and those annoying pop-ups and what is required to view websites with ease (like Java and Adobe Flash Player and so on). So any help on what programs I need exactly and where to download them for free on the Internet would be really appreciated! I would also really appreciate links to exactly where I need to go cause it's hard to hunt down the right stuff. THANK YOU!!!!
