I'm looking at some of the sites that I visit regularly (several of which are forums that would NOT include this for advertising money), and I've noticed that words are sometimes hypertext links to other sites, very much advertisements. Is this something on my computer, and if it is, how do I fix this? my normal spyware and virus protection doesn't seem to be fixing it. I don't want these links. SIMPLE STEPS TO

For XP
Use the programs twice once without internet on, and once with it running. The only program that will work in safemode F8 is AVG anti-spy ware.
Also go to control panel, internet options-privacy tab-make sure the popup blocker box is checked.
Move the slider bar to med-high-click apply-OK
Also on control panel-system-Remote-make sure both boxes are unchecked-click apply-OK (this will keep hackers from getting into computer when left on and no one is around or home)
(all other virus programs and spyware programs should be deleted)

It's highly doubtful that you are on sites you normally visit and seeing a specific link changed to something malicious. Most likely you have turned on some setting that is highlighting words... like a dictionary link.
If you really suspect malware then it's time to take a look at the security program(s) you use.
You mentioned using virus AND spyware protection which tells me you probably are not using a proper security suite that includes complete protection and is from a reliable vendor (like mcafee or norton) so I would advise you to upgrade to a more reliable product and keep it properly configured and completely up to date. You can always check your security is working properly by going to a reliable vendor site like symantec.com or trendmicro.com and running their free web based online scanner.
