How do you find out your city's public wireless internet WEP?

I'm using Philadelphia Wireless to connect my PSP to the net. But it says I need a WEP encryption and I don't know how to get it.

If You Need A Password t's probally not the city's wi-fi, but some cities are werid, so if it is he city's you can probally get it from the town hall, if you prove you live there.

I think you should contact your internet service provider so that they can explain to you how connecting to the internet via wireless works and can walk you through setting up your settings.


The way you are wording your question tells me very clearly that you do not understand at all what you are doing... and you really would be better served contacting them directly so that they can explain it.

You find wireless access points with your connection software.
WEP is an encryption (like a password) so if you are being asked for it you are trying to connect to something that is not "public"
etc etc it would take a long time to explain... contact them.

Agreed with above on the contacting the provider portion. However, it isn't a necessary fact that you aren't connected to the cities WAP. I can't tell you which ones do and do not, but I do recall some cities that have implemented wireless have placed security on them. As the city residents are actually paying for it. The city I am employed by was looking at providing public access and I was directed to look into this. Philly was one of the cities I actually looked in to, and almost any city that I could get my hands on info for without contacting. Basicly I poured through copies of GCN (Government Computing News).

Mainly, just wanted to let you know...despite the above 'expert opinion' there are cities that have implemented security on there wireless. Although, I don't know why they would use WEP for something like that but hey. Good Luck.
