Hi..Malware and a file called elsg.bak?

A while back I got a malware infection on my XP. Sexually explicit emails would be getting sent from my comp. I found this info out when McCaffe AntiVirus would send me a report log. But, McCafee was not picking up the source of the problem.

I downloaded BitDefender, and when I did a virus scan it found a file under Windows-System 32- Elsg.(something).Bak

I even didnt get any report logs from McCafee telling me about any viruses...However, when I tried to manually delete elsg.(something).bak-- I cant remember what word was inbetween elsg and bak-- I wasnt able to defend it because "I had to make sure the program wasnt copy written or currently being used". The reason why I had to manually delete it was because BitDefender couldnt do it. So, I decided to use Safe Mode but I still got the Copywritten/File may be in use message. Please, tell me what to do..Do u have a file called elsg.(something).bak? I know there's one called elsg.(something) but that seems to be a normal file. Thx

Use some other software. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

McAFee and Bit Defender are only for viruses, you need a Trojan remover.

Save all your files to a CD/DVD or an external hard drive, and then wipe your system and reinstall Windows.

Seriously. If your computer has been compromised that bad, all bets are off on completely cleaning it out.

Once you've reinstalled Windows, install McAfee first thing. Then, update Windows entirely.

After that, do a full scan of all the files you backed up. If you don't, you risk re-introducing the virus to your computer.

When you install more than one antivirus on your computer it will cause them to conflict with each other and cause neither to work properly.

When you have done that the only way to correct the problem is to completely and properly remove BOTH (all) via add/remove programs then reboot and install the one you intend to use.

Most likely your McAfee is no longer working properly because you caused this conflict.

Your McAfee was also probably not kept up to date with the latest definition files and/ or was not a "complete" suite that includes protection for things like spyware and adware in addition to the antivirus scanner.... and most likely the original problem was either something other than a "virus" in the truest sense or it was one that could've been caught with an up to date product.

I would advise you to run a web based scan from symantec.com to see if you can identify exactly what malware you are infected with... as some will require some manual removal. If it merely tells you to update your .dat files then uninstall all of the scanners, reboot, and reinstall McAfee as instructed above and make sure it is completely up to date and properly configured and then run a complete scan.

Good Luck
