Viruses on a Mac? |
I got a MacBook Pro laptop and the people who work there told me I don't need virus protection for a Mac product. But that just doesn't seem right. Should I get some type of virus protection software? Have any of you Mac users out there gotten a virus before? If you keep yourself aware of the new threats, i think you dont need security software. Unless, you are always downloading and installing files from unknown source, a security scanner is a must. it is true that macs are less likely to get a virus, but it doesnt mean that its impossible I did computer tech support for a school district for 10 years. I never had a Mac running MacOs X get a virus. There are no MacOs X viruses in the wild. There is one malware you can get from a porn site which tricks you into thinking you need it to view porn video. It is also available as a free but fake anti-virus for Macs. Unless you run Windows on your MacBook, you don't need an anti-virus. If you are sent (emailed) one of the 115,000 Windows viruses, you can email it to a Windows user if you forward it in an email. I wouldn't waste the money on an anti-virus application that will slow down your Mac and find nothing. Windows viruses do not affect Macs. It is possible to get a virus. Just as apple says, "While no computer connected to the Internet will ever be 100% immune from attack..." it is A LOT more immune than the windows counterpart. Now I personally have not gotten a virus but I do have a virus checker for my Mac. I think the paranoia that virus threaten us everywhere anywhere was ingrained into us from our past windows experience. So to put you at ease you can try this open source antivirus engine and rest easy. http://www.clamxav.com/ |
