Avast or avg antivrus?

AVG free every time.
Avast needs to have your registration renewed every 14 months and isn't as fast as AVG.

AVG will try and auto update daily if you connect to the internet.

In my opinion, AVG all the way. I've tried both, and I much prefer the simple, user-friendly interface of AVG. It runs quietly in the background doing its job. You can easily schedule the automatic scans and updates. It's completely fuss-free.

However, Avast has the added benefit of an on-access scanner, which AVG doesn't have. However, I also use the fantastic free program, Spyware Terminator, which includes an anti-virus as well and also has an on-access scanner. So I just enable the anti-virus on that, and it scans my system all the time for both spyware and viruses, then I have AVG scheduled to do a daily scan and update. It's the perfect combination for me.

If you're using Vista, a free anti-virus and free anti-spyware program is all you need to protect your system, as Vista has so many built-in security features, such as anti-phishing and protected mode in IE, and User Account Control. Obviously, you need to have these enabled to be protected...

If you're using XP or anything earlier, many people have doubted the effectiveness of a basic, free anti-virus program as earlier Windows versions are a lot less secure than Vista. However, I have always used AVG even when I had Windows 2000, and never had any problems...I guess it depends on the kind of of websites you frequent to decide whether you need extra protection or not!

EDIT: I'm unsure what some people are on about here when they say AVG does not update itself. My AVG has always updated itself, you just need to set it up in the scheduler to scan and update at your preferred times. As fas as I know, AVG has always had the ability to update itself.

I prefer AVG because of its interface. Avira is another free option. It has better detection rates but gives a popup once a day or so when auto updating.

I'm staying with AVG because it does update it'self and is one of the best antiVirus programs that i have ever used includeing the pay ones like Norton and Macafee.
I have tryed and uninstalled both Norton and Macafee and AOL even gives Macafee free to it's subcibers.

Both do a pretty decent job at protecting your pc from viruses. Although avast tends to generate a rather high false positives than AVG. So choosing between the two, I've got to go with AVG (although makes no difference if the AV is always updated as it protects your pc from viruses).
