Set up a Dedicated Server?

I would like some more details on how to set up a backbone dedicated server.

I want one totaly run by me, i don't want to buy from a webhost.

I do the same from home all on my adsl line here's what I did.

1) made sure my ISP gave me a set of 8 IP address (static)

2)went onto fleabay brought a cheap server 拢10.00 approx $20.00

3)Brought the cheapest copy of windows 2000 server possible

Made tonnes of errors on the way

But now have an up and running server web host, all that sort of stuff all on my own.

I will swap to linux next.

you have just started in some philosphical ways.

Shop around ! Don't spend your money until you are completely satisfied

Rent a book from a library on related subjects and read factual information from relied sources.

Gain an IT certificate at college and then build your server in your spare time.

well there is so many different types of Dedicated Server, u mean for web hosting, games server, ftp, script, email etc..
it all depends on this.. most servers with either run windows 2003/2008 server or a distro of linux
if you dont know linux to an advanced level i would advise going with windows 2003 server

You need to rent a server in a managed datacenter on a backbone connection.
Since you're in the UK, you will want to rent space somewhere under UK laws. I would use http://www.rackspace.co.uk as they seem to be reasonably priced.
You can go to their website and chat with a member of staff in realtime about their deals.
