How can I make my own encryption software?

I need to find a program that allows me to make other programs, like QBASIC or something, but I want a program that deals with files on a more basic level. I want to use this to make my own encryption software using my own algorithms.

If you have Qbasic, you already have a free program that will allow you to make your own encryption. It won't be fast or anything, but it can do it. I would suggest you learn C since that is the programming language that you'll find most of the known good algorithms in. Perhaps the best way to state that is actually the algorithms with no known practical attacks.

There is no such thing as an "encryption software maker." This idea and similar ideas float around the encryption news groups somewhat regularly and is easily proven to be a huge mistake. Even mixing known good ideas will provide weak encryption at best.

On a more basic level, C or C++ is generally the programming language of choice for encryption algorithms. It allows a lot of things much more efficiently than most other languages. DJGPP is probably the best free C compiler for DOS. You could use Java and a few other programming languages.

Until you learn a whole lot more about cryptology, I suggest you leave the encryption algorithm design to those who have a lot more experience. I've been playing with encryption since I was in grade school. I started with the pencil and paper ciphers and I've expanded into the more serious side of data security and encryption. Even with my experience, I don't even pretend that any of my algorithms are all that secure. I can however use secure algorithms in such a way that a secure product results.

Look up the sci.crypt FAQ and then the Snake Oil FAQ. I think you'll find you have a whole lot to learn about crypto.
