What should I learn first?

I plan on making my own webpage. What language should I learn first?

XHTML
HTML
or if there is another one.

btw I hear xhtml is not as sloppy as html.

Men, take it easy. If you want to learn something in life, you've got to start by the smallest things, and them move on to the bigger ones.

Web-design is a whole-thing, big action range. There are many branches, and tons of possibilities. As well, there are many, many languages, and many applications for each one.

So, whatever the language you want to learn, you've got to start by HTML. This is the most basic of them all, and it was one of the very first ones created. It's very simple, and quite easy, that's why it's still used, and didn't disappeared or mutated like his fellow seniors.

HTML saves a stretch relationship with all the programming languages, not only Internet languages. So the best thing is to begin by it. You can use Macromedia's set, Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash to begin. This is the best pack of Internet-design tools available.

Once you can make an organized web page with images, text with different fonts and add stuff like music, videos or flash, you're ready to proceed.

The best stuff to learn next are some languages similar to HTML, that work side-by-side with it and are easy to begin with if you already know HTML. They are CSS, JavaScript and Flash's ActionScript. They're though, don't think it's gonna be an easy ride, but they're the very bases of Internet programming.

You don't need to deeply learn HTML, neither CSS, JavaScript and ActionScript. You just need to understand them, and be able to create some cool stuff on them. But don't worry, they're like learning a new real-life language, so you're not going to become the immediate expert. Yet, if you feel interested by any of them, you can go deep, and you'll discover that with all three you will be able to make very showy and amazing stuff.

Once you can say you're done with them, either because you're sick or because you're really good, you can move onto this ones:

PHP
Pearl
Deep Script Creation, such as ECMAScript and JavaScript
XHTML
Deep ActionScript
SQL
MySQL

And as far as to C#, C++, and many others, that are very complex.

Remember, you've got to start by the smallest things. You don't need to go deep in a language, just understand it. And you need to be creative, the most important out of all.

I hope to have been useful, and wish you good luck!!

XHTML

html is the simpler way to go and then work up to xhtml

XHTML followed by CSS.

Learn the basics of html just to get started and then pick up on xhtml. xhtml is the popular choice to build a page but start with basics.

XHTML, hands down. It is a cleaner version of HTML, and it is fast becoming the standard. With the "Web 2.0" trend hitting, if you are learning for the sake of getting into design, there will be absolutely no money in HTML. Sites that are being (professionally) designed today are being done using XHTML and CSS. Learn to effectively use those, and your skill will be valuable.

HTML is easier. You should look into Adobe Dreamweaver.
