How exactly do you make money from website advertisements?

Okay.... so I'm very interested in building my own website soon, but honestly know very little in HTML and Java script or anything for that matter. Thats totally irrelevnat howvere, and I will be taking lessons and reading guides on web design.

My question is this: Though my main objective for having a website is for personal achievment, I have also been told that a website can actually earn you money. Is this true? How can a google advertisemnt make me money? How much money is made from a single ad? Many ads?

It depends on the advertising and the nature of the program. With something like Google AdSense, you get paid when someone clicks on an ad. Once your site has a proven history of traffic, you might approach vendors whose customer demographic is in your site readership, and sell ad space based in impressions (how many times the add got viewed) instead of clicks. The rate is usually per 1000 impressions.

The trouble with making money with ads is...

1) When they click the ad, they've left your website. Which might be okay with you, unless you're offering some other product or service on the site, in which case you just lost a potential customer.

2) For someone to actually WANT to click on an ad, we must assume that the content of your site is so uninteresting that they'd rather click on the ad then keep reading what you have to say. I know two guys with blogs on similar topics. One is a better writer than the other. Guess who gets more money from AdSense?

Other ways to earn...

3) Join affiliate programs where the product for sale will be of interest to your readership, but not a direct competitor. For example, if you've got an online hiking magazine, don't link to other mags on hiking, but do link to vendors selling hiking boots, trail maps, etc.

4) Sell the stuff yourself. The software you need to run an online store is open-source and free... osCommerce, ZenCart, or my favorite, Drupal...

When you make your website, you can sign up for ads company such as google adsense. If you get accepted you can place the google ads which relates to your website content and everytime someone clicks on the ads you ger money. Get it?

As Marnie stated, your best bet is Google Adsense, whom dominates the ad market and is also the only real option for small timers like myself. I averaged about $30/day last year. You have to establish traffic (link building and loads of content help your revenues) to your web site for the ad programs to give you significant income.

Google adsens is good as long as you have good traffic and good content on your site. Setup is easy, once you have an adsense account, just put adsense html code into your webpage. Please consider about color blending, ads placement, etc.. for better result.
