Nothing in life is free.

First you will need to register your domain name... $$

Then you will either need to set up a home computer as a server and subscribe to a broadband connection, or have a site host it (monthly $$). That's not to mention if you go over your allocated bandwitdth on a hosting server (more $$).

Normally the minimum charges for a domain would have to be paid.
Over and above that, there are sites offering FREE hosting without ads and ftp access and Email too. So it can be very cheap to host a .com site ... roughly less than $10 for 1 year.

However Microsoft was giving Free .com domains as well as hosting and Live mail for free. This was available on their OfficeLive site at http://officelive.microsoft.com where you pay NOTHING for domain name as well as hosting for small businesses. However there were very few features like no ftp and you had to use predefined templates as well as having a Live search box on every page. Better to spend a paltry $10 thats less than one dollar a month and get a .com site with few more features.

Currently I set up a dotcom site with 250 MB space, 1GB data transfer per month, FTP access, PHP, CGI and 500 email accounts and it cost me $9.45 (INR 345 only) for 1 year.

Edit > As for David S posting below, the package is free for ONE year and next year gets free if you refer a paying customer. So ther is still money to be paid even for hosting. A marginal disadvantage compared to above.
