how do i number the pages?

Go to Insert, and Page Numbering. Another window will come up and you pick how you want the pages numbered. At the bottom, top, right hand side or left.

go to view then headers and footers

On the toolbar that pops up you can choose insert page number either for the header or the footer

view-header/footer. Add the header or footer where you want it to count pages.

If you're using Word XP (2002) or an adjacent version, do this. (Word Vista (2007) no doubt has a similar facility).

1. Click the Insert->Page Numbers menu item.
2. Set the Position and Alignment text boxes to put the page number where you want it.
3. Click OK.

To get any other text in the header (your name, class, paper title), double click in the Header on the page and enter the text. Double click outside the header, or close the Header and Footer pop-up menu to get out.
