For a Web design position. What are the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing this type of position?

First, be clear about where your interests and talents lie.

A web designer is someone with artistic ability who designs the site - layout, color scheme, fonts, graphics, etc. Often, web designers have some sort of art or print design background. Photoshop skills and design coursework are a must. Larger companies often employ designers.

A front-end web developer usually takes the designer's layout and creates a working page with html/css, and maybe javascript/ajax. In smaller companies, designers do the coding as well.

A back-end web developer coordinates with the front-end developer to create a working web application using things like php and mysql.

There's a lot of cross-over between the roles, many web pages don't need any back-end coding, some web applications generate all of the front-end code within the app., and in some cases there is 1 person doing everything.

personality; the IT guy, geeky, smart, talented

The web has become a lot more advance, people will be looking for somebody with skills, mainly programming, ap.net, php, java, dhtml, etc. If your not the programmer type,you may not enjoy this.
