Want to migrate WindowsXp to Ubuntu 7.10. Can u tell me first step and basics for this.?

I want to migrate to Ubunto from Window Xp.

If you don't have experience with Linux, I recommend PCLinuxOS.

Regardless of which distro you choose, I would use the LiveCd to see if it will work with your hardware. Keep in mind that it will be much faster when installed.

PCLinuxOS has a tutorial for installation on the desktop once you boot it up.

Whichever you download to try, burn as an .iso image.
Enter BIOS and set boot order to CD-ROM first.

I don't have much Ubuntu experience as I found it hard to use.

Also keep in mind that you can do a dual boot to be able to play games with MS if you wish or if you have a software that absolutely is required and runs only on MS.

First step is to download the Live CD from www.ubuntu.com

Run the program for a few days to get used to it before you make the switch.

The first thing to do is go to the Ubuntu page and download the iso file for Ubuntu. You have several options that are explained on the page. An alternative is to go to Linux Mint page and download the standard live CD image. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu but is in some ways a little easier to learn.

You will then need to burn the iso image. The instructions for that are on both Ubuntu and Linux Mint pages. Or, once you have downloaded the iso images, come back here for for instructions on how to burn an iso image.
