What programs do I need to be a graphic designer? Do I just need the adobe creative suite? Or are there more?

I would also reccomend getting something for Flash designing, as a lot more designs for graphic designers are becoming more Flash based. Since Adobe did purchase Macromedia products, you might be able to get a bundled price for the Adobe Suite & Flash tools.

It depends on what you want to do. You don't even necessarily need adobe (a large part of why those tools are so popular is simply because people here that they're the best and never consider any alternatives). There are lots of other graphics software available, both commercial and open source.

You should also use PRO/Desktop which is the program that I use at school, it is a very good CAD program.

Adobe Creative Suite is the best there is and ever was.
Many try to emulate it but There is only one Creative Suite.

YOU need to be creative (and artistic) - no program can substitute for that. You can use any graphics program - Gimp will do.
