How do I print a poster from regular size printer paper?

I'm looking for a freeware program that will split a large graphic onto multiple sheets of standard (8.5" x "11"?) printer paper. It doesn't have to be super hi-res, it's just text and I want to make a template for a sign (about 36" x 48") that I'm painting. I was hoping to tape the sheets together, lay it on the sign and then cut out the letters to spray paint the letters. A friend of mine used to do this a long time ago, I think the software was "Printmaster Gold" or something? Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sierra Print Artist (it's a cd and you need to install it), i'm not really sure if it's sold in other countries but it's available here in the Philippines.
