MSN messenger for windows xp service pack 1?

ugh this is annoying me, i cant seem to download any msn messenger and use it, everytime im done downloading it always ask me if i want to download the new version before i can even sign in sucessfully, it does it with every version ive downloaded, HOWEVER the new version doesnt work on windows xp service pack 1 which is what i have, how stupid of msn to do that im really getting mad, it used to work on my computer but i had to delete everything on my computer and now it doesnt work. please help!

just so everyone knows i have tried downloading msn messneger from the oldversion website and that was before i came here on yahoo to ask my question, it does the same thing!

I had EXACTLY the same problem;
Simple solution -


Download Service Pack 2.
It scans your computer for a bunch of updates you need,
there might not be many, there might be a lot, but once
you get them re-install windows live messenger and it'll work.

Try downloading one of the older versions from OldVersion. The webpage is below.

Also, since you have XP, you would have Windows Messenger automatically installed with the operating system. If you have removed it at some point, you can download it again at the Microsoft site below:

Windows Messenger is not the same as MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger. It doesn't have all the perks compared to the other messenger products. If you have Windows Messenger installed, you can enable it by following the steps below:

To enable Windows Messenger:
Go to Windows Messenger
Tools
Options
Preferences
Tick the box beside "Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts"
Click OK

Then go to Outlook (or Outlook Express)
Tools
Options
General tab
Tick the box beside "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger"
Click Apply
Click OK

Afterwards you would need to go into the Options and set it up .Net addresses.
