MSN messenger, add request when its not even used?

Today I opened my MSN messenger and there was an add request from a friend who I know used to use msn messenger but now no longer uses it ever. How did I get this add request message does anyone know? I used it every day and never got one before. I asked and they told me they dont even have it on their computer anymore. How can this be?
