MSN: He appeared then disappeared, what's up?

One of my friend came online and I sent him a message, I got no reply and then he went offline after a few seconds! I was really pissed. Could somebody explain why? Technically.

I've had that happen and found out that they were still online but changed there status to appear offline which i thought was ignorant.
