Should I increasing RAM for better speed of my notebook?

I have a notebook with 1.6 GHz processor and 248 MB RAM. When i brought it 2 years ago it was working fine. But now with antivirus, firewall and many softwares the system appears to be very slow. It takes lots of time to open many heavy software and has overall slow down. One suggestion i came across is increase the RAM to 1GB. Is it ok if i do that. I mean will the existing framework of my notebook which is 2 year old will be able to support 1 GB RAM? In simple terms, is it ok if i upgrade my RAM to 1GB, to increase the speed of my notebook?

newegg.com is a great website with pretty heap RAM prices. You should be able to put the name and model of your computer into their little ram finder thing...and it'll tell you what kind to buy. Crucial.com also has a great RAM finder. I believe bestbuy.com also has a RAM finder as well.

My thinking is RAM is pretty cheap....and either way it'll help your system out. Start cheap and if that doesn't work, then work up to other options.

I'm upgrading another Gig, just waiting for it to come in the mail!

EDIT....weird I have a V2000 too, that I bought about 2 years ago. What are the chances of that? You need to buy PC2700, it can support up 2GB RAM.

Its hard to increase the ram in your notebook but it can be done easily and yes you should it would help your laptop a lot. If you don't know what your doing i suggest you get some help.

Yes, increasing to 1gb ram will make your computer extremely faster.

Absolutely...Your system will support it..Based on the system specs I found..you need to get DDR333 SDRAM....Increasing RAM is the best (and cheapest) way of speeding up a system, and will fix many of the issues you described.

you should get 2 GB of ram. contact the manufacturer of the laptop and the will help you get what you need and tell you what the computer can go up to

You could do that which would increase the speed and your laptop will most likeley be able to take 1GB because it is only 2 years old you could also upgrade your processor and your ram but that is only if you want to make it go alot faster

yes

You have barely enough ram to function so my answer is most definetly increase your ram. I have three times that amount of ram and i am adding more.

Your Notebook definitely needs increasing the RAM. And there is no problem if you increase the RAM to 1GB (1024MB). Your system will support up to 2GB of RAM without any issue.

Increasing memory when it is currently lower that 2GB is always best practice for performance.

yes you need to increase.... the more ram the better. be sure that you look up your ram capacity before you waste your money buying ram you can't put in. a good amount of ram is a gig indeed.... if you can afford it and you computer can handle it then go for 2.... your processor also effects how fast your computer will be... but that isnt easily adjustable. 1.6 is fine though, and will work VERY smoothly with a 1.6ghz processor. also, you can reformat your computer using the disk that came with the manufacturer... if you arent sure how to do so, you can look up that as well... type in "reformat (pc manufacter here)" or "recovery (manufacter name here)" in google for more information..... recovery/reformating resets your computer to a fresh start by overwritting your old and creating a new partition on your hard drive. it will be as if you have a new computer, but be sure to xfer your old files and that are important to a portable drive so you can put them back on your newly formated drive.... hope this helps... later

yes u can upgrade ur RAM to 1 GB or 2GB but its best if u Changed ur processor to latest

First, you should have told about your processor type. Otherwise I think your system will support 1GB RAM and it is bare minimum capacity you should opt for. Since RAM has got cheaper now, you can opt for a 2GB one but after asking your manufacturer about your notebook's support for it. A 2GB RAM will surely give you the optimum speed that you have craved for, at a reliable price.

u need to upgrade it to 1gb or 2gb!!! it depends what ur doing with ur laptop!!! but at least 1gb!!!

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.
