Laptop is Acting up.. cant afford to fix it what to do?

i have never used it to go online so it canT be a virus.. its windows 2000.. iqon is the make.. i start it up it goes into a light plain blue screen and does nothing. so i had to turn it off by the button, i know its bad for it. so i tried it in safe mode it goes to desktop but i cant go into anything. please please does anyone have any idea what to do? i would appreciate your knowledge.. i got a computer fixer cd but it does nothing

ok how will i reload? i have hundreds of hours of music on it and dear pictures but no actual documents i need so can you tell me how to reset it? when i press ctrl- alt- del it does nothing at mo. i will follow any step by step advice anyone may share with me

The first thing I would do is to boot up with a CD that can start your computer such as knoppix

Once you recover / backup your files then you have to worry about getting your install CDs for windows 2000. A decent free alternative would be ubuntu linux.

it is quite good at supporting older PCs and laptops. I run it on both my old Dell laptops (500Mhz latitude and 800Mhz inspiron).

sounds like the blue screen of death. I would have a friend reformat your hard drive and reload the operating system. You've pretty much lost all data so I hope you've made backups. Best of luck!

your drivers might be in conflict with windows. try to look for an update (updates both for drivers and softwares) for your laptop online.

regarding viruses, you'd never know, because these days there are just too many malwares out there. so running an antivirus and a antispyware are good ideas.

Actually you might be able to fix it. Boot into safe mode and run a chkdsk on the hard drive. Start/Run; type "Command" in the box hit enter then at the prompt type "chkdsk c: /f". This will scan your hard drive for corrupted files and problems. I would recommend backing up your files first but that might require a service call by a tech who would pull your drive and back it up on another controller.

You got two way if you want to fix this and save your data, either put the windows CD and re install the windows on the existing windows directory without formatting ( this way is a bit messy) or if is possible run your machine on the safe mode save your data, format and reinstall your windows, simple as this.
