Acer aspire 5100 laptop gone really slow - pls help?

Hi guys, mucho help needed please.

My Acer aspire laptop, bought only last august has slowed to a near standstill over the past week. I looked at past answers on this and tried some of the suggestions, but as yet to no avail. Applications take ages to open, when I type there's a delay before the text appears. Also, I use the net for work and need a couple of tabs open at once to compare pages - this has almost slowed to a stop too.

Here's what I've tried so far:
- disk cleanup
- defragmenter
- spyware / adware scan (infections found and erased)
- virus scan (clean)

My virus software is Avast - not the best but working fine up to now, and I have Windows VIsta Home edition. I haven't loaded any new software on the machine recently either, I don't download stuff from the net or load photos on the laptop so can't think why there's this jam happening at the moment.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks, I'm trying these suggestions out here, so far no joy with system restore, it says I don't have enough memory to create a system restore point

check your system tray and remove unnecessary startup items
by using he msconfig utility
access it by clicking the start->run and type msconfig.
in the startup tab
remove entries you dont need

try a system restore its in help and support in there restore the pc to an early date b4 it went slow

What you should do is delete everything that you don't want or need on your computer. Run stuff like spybot-search and destroy
and try AVG free edition, you can get all of them by Google-ing
it...after you do that, it should work at least a little faster
oh by the way...When you delete stuff you don't want, use the Add and remove program, you should fine it in your control panel

if you cannot access the msconfig utility to change your start up programs, and you are running on windows vista, try going into your Windows defender and changing your start up options there...a lot of times, if you are running multiple applications at once, even if you are not using them, I.E. AIM, yahoo messenger, msn mail, msn messenger, zango, limewire, any kind of peer to peer application...these can drastically slow down your computer by using up all of your computers resources, leaving no RAM or processor speed for you to do your work on...

if a system restore and turning off all unneeded applications, and disabling unwanted programs from your start-up don't help, you may need more RAM or a faster processor

Dear
My solution can help you to speed up PC, to make the system run faster and more stable, and to make more disk spaces. You will never have the idea that you update your PC or reinstall the system.
Method 1 You should clean startup
Because that most software has automatically function. When you go to the system they would automatically run in the background. So you always use the software is more convenient. But it will also cause unnecessary troubles. There is so much software when you start your PC that the speed will slow down and they can impact of your normal use. We can tell you some simple methods to clear them.1 You can find start-up under options in settings and check close. It is difficult to close one by one, once automatic operation programs are too many.2 You can clean automatic operation programs by manual operation. They are in 鈥渞un鈥?option of the registry and start menu. Find and clean them.3 If you think the above two methods are not suitable for you. You only clean Start up by professional software. Of course, it is the simplest way.

Method 2 Uninstalls your needless programs.
Open the install/uninstall Program, and Uninstall the software and Plug-ins

Method 3 you need download the software for cleaning system.I can supply you several optimization software. Maybe you don鈥檛 think the optimization software can help you out of distress. But they are your right arms. They can clean temporary files and the registry and your privacy, increases your PC speed.Well adapted to computer users at different competence levels. You can click the website http://computer-optimize.com/ to find the satisfied software

I wish my solution could help you.
