ASUS vs SONY laptop / notebook?

Ok, as poor student I am looking to purchase a lightweight laptop which works well like the one I have now. The problem is that I have a Sony - FS series and it's too big and heavy, I could almost move into it!
I can't carry this around all day, my shoulders ache etc .. So I saw the Sony TZ series as well as the Sony SZ series and was advised to buy the SZ because, although less expensive it works just like the TZ.
BUT
I am now broke and desperately need something else even though I'm a sucker for Sony. I saw the ASUS, which I didn't know about until a few months ago. The prices don't seem too bad, but I have major issues with the fact that I don't know who they are or if indeed they are reputable.
And as for the products, how do they compare with say Sony Laptops? I don't like the 7" one so much (ASUS) - I think I'll be happy with 11 or 12 if they have one, but do they work well?
You know, windows, microsoft, and the usual applications? What about memory? Are they fast?

Also - what about built in camera? DVD drive, CD/RW? Basically I need it to do everything. Please recommend something you have used from ASUS (or why I shouldn't get one). Or recommend another product altogether.

Sony is all around better.

They will be more expensive but will be better in the long run, less repairs needed, less issues.

Go for the Asus. They actually make most of the components for other branded laptops. They are very reliable and robust they are plenty fast enough for what we do which is data analysis, for that you need plenty of processing power believe me. They usually come with built webcams, dvd burners and usually include a carrying case and mouse. We use them at work, have been doing so for years. Never had any problems with them.
The Sony will be overpriced for what it is, you pay for the name.
